Artemide is proud to announce that our President and Founder, Ernesto Gismondi,
was honored by ADI with the Compasso d’Oro Career Award for his continuous work and passion within the design world.

“Aerospace engineer, university professor and entrepreneur, in short: a man of many talents. The founder of Artemide, he has always used design processesas distinctive elements and throughout this long journey he has encouraged and developed collaborations with the world of national and international design. A coherent example of how design can be a concrete strategic lever for cultural and economic growth, he has always worked to ensure that Italian design is a virtuous example at an international level.” – ADI Compasso d’Oro Career Awards

Ernesto Gismondi not only founded and directs Artemide but, as an Aeronautical and Missile engineer he taught Motor for Missiles at the Politecnico of Milan between 1964 and 1984. He is one of the creators of the Memphis Design movement, and he has held numerous positions with organizations including Industriale Lombarda (Assolombarda), Federmeccanica, Confindustria, Ente Autonomo Fiera di Milano, Cosmit, CNEL and at the Ministry for University and Reasearch, as well as Vice-President of ADI.

Discovery, designed by Ernesto Gismondi, was also honored with a 2018 Compasso d’Oro for the design of the unique fixture. Discovery is composed of a perfectly transparent PMMA surface, processed with micro particles so small that the surface is hardly perceptible when the appliance is turned off.

When the appliance is turned on, the transparent interior appears to fill with light as if by magic, as absence is turned into a perfectly diffusing emitting surface.

“To find out how to produce such a thin and light ring we turned to bicycle manufacturers, and the result was this very light luminous profile and an almost invisible lamp.” – Ernesto Gismondi

Together, Artemide and Ernesto Gismondi continue to light the future as they have done for the past 59 years.

The Compasso d’Oro Awards Ceremony was held in Milan on 20 June at the Castello Sforzesco, in the Cortile dell Rocchetta. All participating products were on display in the venue from 21 to 26 June, including Les Danseuses, designed by Atelier OI, select ADI INDEX 2016.
